Often when the word ‘innovation’ comes to mind, we think of the concept of putting forth new ideas, and solving a problem that a large number of us face. Some of the greatest, or most successful results of innovation of the time appear to be those in technology, whose target demographic sways more towards the rich than the needy.
Over the years, we’ve made considerable progress in addressing this issue. Programs put in place allow improved access to life’s amenities for the needy. These include feeding programs, camps to provide shelter, and water programs to name a few.
However, there still exist millions more with inadequate resources to sustain themselves. They lack the basic needs to go ahead with their lives and lose them as a result.
As todays youth, it is of extreme importance that we challenge the assumption of innovation being facilitated only either by a profit motive, or for social welfare.
It is important that we realise that this shouldn’t always be the case. Challenging this assumption opens new doors of opportunities for us and our community. Challenging this assumption enables us alleviate the conditions of those in need.
