About the 5th Singapore Dialogue on Sustainable World Resources

Two years since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, many countries – such as those in ASEAN – are placing increasing emphasis on combating climate change and its adverse impacts. These include efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and steps to prevent the spread of peat and forest fires, which could result in severe transboundary haze pollution. In addition, governments have started to invest in improving air and water quality, low-carbon transport, and better use of physical resources that result in less waste and environmental damage. Experts estimate Asian cities will gain by about $2 trillion a year by 2030, if current predictions on such green investments are proved correct.

One sector in particular, the agroforestry and resource sector, has witnessed a growing momentum in adopting sustainable practices and protecting ecosystems. But the murkiness with how far this momentum has got us in turning back the climate change tide has caused many to ask if we have done enough, and what more we need to do to secure a more sustainable future. Against this backdrop, the Fifth Singapore Dialogue on Sustainable World Resources (SDSWR) invites regional representatives to explore the following questions:

  • What are some effective policies that governments can adopt to establish the right conditions for green growth?
  • What is the plantation sector doing to improve its sustainability practices and how can positive efforts be better rewarded to push others to do the same?
  • To what extent are current industry approaches, like certification, still relevant as a tool for achieving sustainability given the high costs and complicated procedures that can exclude more than it includes?
