About the Programme

Many times, forensic analysis of evidence may not be the first thing that comes to the minds of legal practitioners when they are working on their cases. Some may believe that forensic science is only useful in criminal cases, or their awareness may be focused on the more well-known types of forensic evidence such as fingerprints, DNA and digital forensics. It can be a daunting and time-consuming task for the legal practitioner to interpret and decipher expert reports that contain technical jargon and unfamiliar concepts.

In this seminar, the trainers will demonstrate through the sharing of case studies how forensic evidence can play a vital role in civil cases, such as infringement of intellectual property. Items submitted for forensic analysis can come from a variety of industries. They include suspected counterfeit products such as health and pharmaceutical products, medical devices, and cosmetics and beauty products. In cases of patent infringement, the determination of the chemical composition of products such as dyes, inks, pigments and coatings have proven to be vital evidence.

Legal practitioners will also be introduced to the various elements in an expert report. They will appreciate how the role of a forensic expert is not restricted to producing a forensic report, and discover first-hand how the expert can assist them at various stages of their case through forensic consultancy.
